TSENG'S SECRET PASSION IS THE KITCHEN

Valentine doesn't like eating out. Truthfully, Veld doesn't especially care for it either - he prefers to cook his own food, it's just safer that way - but on this occasion it's for business. The tiny restaurant is surprisingly busy, doesn't seem to have a menu, and no two chairs match. It should be a metaphor for something, Veld thinks, which makes him smile just slightly though he's not sure why.

Valentine raises an eyebrow. "Something funny?"

He doesn't reply. He's too busy watching one of the cooks in the open kitchen towards the back. "See that boy?"

Valentine looks. "He's a little young for you."

Veld rolls his eyes, inwardly; outwardly he just smirks and watches Valentine try not to squirm. "His knife work is good."

"Oh please Velly, we're hiring out of restaurants now?" It's amazing how the opportunity to be a smartass instantly sets Valentine at ease. "We are considering hiring a fourteen, maybe fifteen year old prep chef?"

"He's not just a prep chef," Veld says, too relaxed to be taking a word Valentine says seriously. "I've seen him run the kitchen. He's good at it. Inspires team work."

"Oh, well, he's totally qualified then." Valentine drains his coffee.

"You didn't complain when we hired Reno."

"I was in a coma when you hired Reno."

"Is that right?" Veld tilts his head. "Well, oversight on my part. Next time I go looking for new talent I'll make sure you're not in a state to offer arguments."

"Unbelievable." Vincent sighs and stares as the youth works. "But you're right, beautiful knife work. Kid got a name?"

"I've heard people call him Tseng."

Apparently, he's noticed them staring, and heads over to their table wiping his hands on his apron. "Is there a problem?" he asks in Wutain, with a heavy accent neither of them can place.

Veld ignores his question. "How many languages do you speak?"

"Not enough," Tseng says, level and even. "Barely any Common. And I can't understand half the people that come in here."

"Half of them, hm?" Veld listens to the conversations around him for a moment. "That's more than I can understand. Tell me, what are your feelings toward an exciting career opportunity with the Shin Ra corporation?"

"You should ask sometime when we're not so busy," he says, walking back towards the swamped kitchen.

Vincent is shaking his head. "Cocky little shit."

Veld hums his agreement, tossing money on the table as he stands and straightens his jacket. "Doesn't remind me of anyone."

"No one at all, I'm sure," Vincent nods as they leave.
